Checklist: Moving Out From Your Rental Property

Moving out is one of the most stressful experiences many people will have, but it doesn’t need to be. Let’s break it down for you:

1) Clean, Clean and Clean

This is the biggest and most time-consuming task required when you’re moving out, but it will pay off. Tenants must return the property in the same condition and level of cleanliness as it was in at the beginning of the tenancy, so refer to your Property Condition Report (PCR).  Be Aware, if you have damaged something and it is not fair wear and tear, it is a tenant’s responsibility to repair the damage.

Keep in mind that if you fail to attend to any of the following tasks below, this can lead to deductions from your bond.

• Windows, Window Frames & Skirting Boards to be dusted & cleaned.
• Screens to be brushed & ledge to be cleaned.
• Clean the walls and remove superficial hand marks etc.
• Doors & light switches to be cleaned of hand & finger marks.
• Ensure that all light globes are in working order.
• Clean cupboards inside and outside.
• Remove and clean exhaust fan covers.
• Clean bath and basin.
• Clean shower recess, screens, tiles and grouting. Including treatment and removal of mould.
• Toilet including seat set & Cistern to be cleaned.
• Stove top, oven and oven racks, griller, recess, hotplates, drip trays are all to be cleaned as well as chrome surrounds, enamel exterior cabinet & control panel/ knobs.
• Kitchen sink & laundry tub to be cleaned.
• Cut and edge lawns. Garden/paving to be tidy and free of weeds.
• Cobwebs to be removed from eaves & windows plus internal walls & cornices.
• Paths & driveway to be swept and degreased if required.
• Sweep and tidy garden shed/garage. Including removal of cobwebs.
• Remove all rubbish.

IMPORTANT TIP:

Tenants must book a professional carpet cleaner to steam clean their carpets. Please note that if the real estate agency organises the carpet cleaning on your behalf once you vacate, this can hold up bond release.

If you are living with a furry friend, you will need to have an internal and external flea treatment carried out as well.

2) Utilities & Direct Debit

You must disconnect all the utilities in your name as soon as you move out of your rental property.

3) At the Agency

You must return all the keys from start of tenancy. Missing keys will result in locks rebarreled at your cost.

You should also provide your forwarding address, bank details, carpet cleaning receipt and flea treatment receipt (if applicable).
